Exactly How I Planned and Booked My Curaçao Vacation Step by Step

As teachers, we have one precious week in February to escape the New England winter. We’ve done all types of trips – Puerto Vallarta, the Bahamas, Cancun, Spain, etc. This year, we wanted easy, minimal effort, an all-inclusive feel, and no over-planning.

Here’s exactly how I planned and booked our 5-night Curaçao vacation – including how we bundled flights and hotel, why we chose the Renaissance Wind Creek Resort, and what the total trip cost us.

If you’re planning your own Curaçao vacation, you can follow this step-by-step.

Why I Chose Curaçao for This Caribbean Trip

We knew we wanted reliable warmth in February – not “might be warm,” but guaranteed warm.

Aruba had been on my radar for years, but I’ve never found flight pricing I loved from Boston. So I started looking at the other ABC islands – Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao.

Curaçao stood out immediately.

It offers:

  • Consistently sunny weather
  • Beaches with calm, swimmable water
  • Direct or easy one-stop flights from Boston
  • And something most Caribbean islands don’t have: a UNESCO World Heritage historic district

Willemstad’s colorful Dutch colonial buildings give the island a European-meets-Caribbean feel. It’s not just a beach destination – it has personality.

What I Wanted in a Vacation Right Now

This February trip needed to check a few very specific boxes:

  • Truly warm weather
  • Direct or easy flights
  • Minimal planning stress
  • An all-inclusive option

We usually love boutique hotels and building our own itineraries. But this year? We’re teachers. We’re parents. We’re tired. This trip needed to feel relaxing and easy – not like another project to manage.

Why Curaçao Beat Other Caribbean Islands

Curaçao quickly rose to the top of our list. It offered direct flights, good deals (more on that below), and plenty to do beyond the beach.

Unlike some Caribbean destinations that feel heavily resort-focused, Curaçao has personality. The colorful Dutch colonial buildings, walkable neighborhoods, and European-meets-Caribbean vibe made it feel like more than just a beach vacation.

It’s also located outside the primary hurricane belt, which makes it a more reliable option during much of the year – something I always factor into Caribbean planning.

Best Time to Visit Curaçao (And Why I Booked These Dates)

The best time to visit Curaçao is typically December through April. This is the dry season, with sunny days, low rainfall, and consistently warm temperatures.

February worked perfectly for us. It aligns with school vacation week, falls squarely in peak weather season, and gives us that mid-winter reset when we need it most.

Step 1: How I Booked Flights to Curaçao

Starting My Search on Expedia

Expedia is always my first stop when I’m planning a trip – especially for Caribbean vacations. I love being able to compare flight and hotel packages in one place. Fewer moving parts means fewer headaches.

For this trip, I priced out flights alone and bundled packages to see which gave us the best overall value. (Spoiler: the bundle mattered – more on that when I break down the total cost.)

One reason I stick with Expedia? I trust their customer service. And for this trip… I actually needed it. I’ll explain what happened later in this post.

Comparing Airlines and Layovers

Even though I usually book through Expedia, I always double-check flight options on Kiwi.com and Skyscanner first.

Why?

Because Boston to Curaçao does have direct flights – but sometimes a short layover can save hundreds per ticket, and it did.

Originally, connecting through Charlotte made the most sense financially and time-wise. But when American Airlines changed our flight times, that was no longer true. Expedia customer service helped change our flight so we could connect through Miami. But here’s the key: Miami is BUSY. I made sure to avoid tight layovers so we weren’t sprinting through the airport stressed out before vacation even started.

Pro tip: Saving money isn’t worth it if you miss your connection.

Using Capital One Points Strategically

I also checked Capital One Travel since I have the Venture card.

We didn’t end up using points for this booking, but here’s why I still love this card for travel (and everything else):

  • 2x miles on every purchase – no matter what it is
  • Miles can be used to reimburse travel purchases after booking
  • Flexible redemption (not airline-specific)

That means even if I don’t use the portal to book the trip, just paying for it saves me money and earns me points!

Step 2: Deciding Where to Stay in Curaçao

Before booking, I considered Curaçao’s layout because where you stay really shapes your experience.

The main areas I considered:

Willemstad (Punda & Otrobanda) – Historic, colorful, walkable, and full of restaurants and shops.
Mambo Beach / Sea Aquarium area – Beach-focused with several large resorts.
Piscadera Bay – Quieter resort area, short drive from downtown.
Westpunt – More remote and closer to some of the island’s most famous natural beaches.

Because we didn’t want to rely heavily on a rental car, Willemstad immediately stood out.

Resort vs Boutique Hotel: What I Considered

Usually we love a boutique hotel. Smaller properties. Local charm. Build-your-own itinerary.

But this February trip needed to be easy. And, we wanted it all paid for before we left.

We wanted:

  • On-site dining options
  • A pool + beach setup ready to go
  • Walkability to explore without driving everywhere
  • Minimal effort

That’s why a full-service resort in Willemstad made more sense than a standalone boutique hotel this time.

Why I Chose the Renaissance Wind Creek Curaçao Resort

We ultimately chose the Renaissance Wind Creek Resort in Willemstad, and here’s why:

  • It’s directly next to the historic Rif Fort
  • Walkable to Queen Emma Bridge and the colorful Handelskade buildings
  • On-site private beach lagoon (calm, swimmable water)
  • Multiple dining options
  • Strong recent reviews

This gave us the best of both worlds: resort convenience and city access.

Instead of feeling like we’re stuck only at the resort, we can walk into town for dinner, explore the UNESCO district, and still come back to a pool chair.

For us, that balance was exactly right.

Step 3: Booking Our Hotel + Flight as an Expedia Package

Why I Chose an Expedia Package for This Trip

Once I knew we wanted the Renaissance Wind Creek in Willemstad, I went back to Expedia and priced everything two ways:

  • Booking flights separately
  • Booking a flight + hotel package (including airport transfer)

The package came out cheaper.

And not just by a little.

Bundling our flights and hotel saved us money upfront and simplified the entire process. One confirmation. One account. One place to manage everything.

Why I Felt Comfortable Booking a Resort Through Expedia

I’ve used Expedia for years, so I trust the process. But this trip reminded me why I keep going back.

After booking, we actually needed to adjust part of our reservation – our outgoing flight. Our packaged deal had us flying two different carriers, American down and Jet Blue home. Instead of being stuck dealing with multiple companies, Expedia handled it. Their customer service stepped in and resolved it quickly – changing our flight at no cost!

That peace of mind matters – especially when you’re traveling internationally. Saving money isn’t worth it if you start your vacation stressed out.

Choose the flight you can realistically make – especially when traveling during busy winter weeks.

Step 4: Booking Excursions Through Viator

Why I Use Viator for Tours

After flights and hotel were locked in, I started browsing Viator for available excursions.

I like Viator because:

  • Reviews are easy to compare
  • Cancellation policies are clear
  • You can filter by duration and activity type
  • It helps you see what’s actually popular on the island
  • I’ve never had a problem with any tour I’ve ever booked with them (which I can’t say for all companies I’ve tried)

Instead of guessing what to do, I can see what thousands of travelers have already loved.

Excursions We’re Considering

You can list options like:

  • Klein Curaçao boat day
  • Snorkeling tours
  • ATV or UTV island tours
  • Westpunt beach hopping
  • Willemstad walking tour

Do You Need a Rental Car in Curaçao?

What I Decided

Since we’re staying at the Renaissance in Willemstad, we decided not to rent a car for the entire trip.

We can walk to:

  • Queen Emma Bridge
  • Punda & Otrobanda neighborhoods
  • Restaurants and shops
  • Waterfront views

For excursions farther west (like remote beaches), we’ll rely on organized tours – or possibly rent a car for just one day if needed.

When You Should Rent a Car

If you’re staying outside Willemstad, want to explore beaches like Grote Knip or Playa Kalki on your own, or plan to stay in multiple areas, a rental car makes much more sense.

But if you’re staying downtown and booking a few guided tours, you can absolutely manage without one.

My Curaçao Trip Cost Breakdown

When I booked this trip in November, I compared two options before checking out:

• Booking flights and hotel separately
• Bundling flights + hotel + airport transfer as an Expedia package

At the time of booking, the bundled package was meaningfully cheaper – which is why I chose that option.

Here’s what we actually paid in November: (flights, 5 nights at Renaissance Wind Creek resort, + airport transfer): $3636

What That Same Trip Costs Today

Out of curiosity, I re-priced the exact same trip for the same dates:

Total bundle cost today (hotel, flights + airport transfer): $4,148

Booking separately today would cost approximately:

  • Hotel: $3984
  • Flights: $1050
  • Airport transfer: $82

Total booked separately: $4,952

What I Almost Did Wrong While Planning

Even though I book trips all the time, I don’t always get it right the first time. On this trip, I made a mistake I don’t usually make.

When checking out on Expedia, I skipped the travel insurance add-on because I figured I’d purchase my own policy later. I prefer researching and choosing my own “cancel for any reason” coverage – especially traveling in February from New England.

Snowstorms.
School germs.
Kids’ schedules shifting.

All very real possibilities.

The problem?
“Later” stretched longer than it should have.

We did end up purchasing travel insurance, but because I waited, I missed the window for cancel-for-any-reason coverage – which typically has to be purchased within a short timeframe of your initial deposit.

That’s not ideal.

Travel insurance is always a non-negotiable for me. Waiting to secure it was a planning mistake – and one I won’t repeat.

Lesson learned: If you’re booking during winter (or anytime you have unpredictable variables), don’t delay purchasing insurance if you want maximum flexibility.

We receive a fee when you get a quote from World Nomads using this link. We do not represent World Nomads. This is not a recommendation to buy travel insurance.

Final Thoughts: Would I Book It This Way Again?

Yes.

For this specific season: tired teachers in February needing warmth without logistics stress – bundling flights and staying at a walkable resort in Willemstad was the right move.

We wanted:

  • Predictable weather
  • No surprise costs
  • Minimal planning
  • Easy exploration
  • Relaxation without effort

This trip checks every box.

After we return, I’ll be sharing:

  • My honest Renaissance Wind Creek review
  • Our favorite beaches in Curaçao
  • What I would do differently next time

If you’re considering Curaçao for a winter escape, I’ll break down exactly what’s worth it – and what isn’t.
