A Real Traveler’s Guide to Puerto Vallarta: Where to Stay, What to Do & How to Plan Your Trip
I’ve been to Puerto Vallarta twice – both in February (in my opinion, one of the best times to visit!), and I’m already planning my next trip. This city hits that perfect mix of beaches, food, nightlife, culture, affordability, and walkability. Whether you prefer all-inclusive resorts or boutique hotels right in the middle of the action, PV just works.
This Puerto Vallarta guide everything you need to know to plan your trip, based on my real experiences spending a week here each time.

Why Puerto Vallarta Is Amazing
PV is one of the best beach destinations in Mexico – and honestly one of the best overall travel destinations for couples, solo travelers, and friend trips. It’s:
- Safe and welcoming
- Budget-friendly
- LGBTQ+ friendly (especially the Romantic Zone!)
- Packed with great restaurants
- Home to beautiful beaches
- Super easy to get around
- Full of authentic charm without losing modern comforts
Plus, with nonstop flights from major U.S. cities (including Boston!), getting here doesn’t take all day.
Where to Stay in Puerto Vallarta
1. Nuevo Vallarta: Easy, Relaxing, and All-Inclusive Friendly (My First Trip)
My first visit was the classic PV “starter trip.” I stayed at an all-inclusive in Nuevo Vallarta, just north of the main city.
Pros
- Quiet and peaceful
- Wide, clean beaches
- Great for first-timers
- Resort amenities everywhere
- Less crowded than downtown
Cons
- Far from the nightlife
- You’ll need a bus, taxi, or Uber to get into town
I took the local bus right into the city (super budget-friendly!), wandered the Malecon, shopped, grabbed food, and eased into the PV vibe without feeling overwhelmed.
Where I stayed: Marival Emotions, an affordable all-inclusive with great food, pools, a swim-up bar, and a wide beach.
2. Romantic Zone: Boutique Hotels + Walkability + ENERGY (My Second Trip)

Trip #2 was a completely different vibe. I stayed in the Romantic Zone, just a few blocks from the beach and surrounded by restaurants, clubs, rooftop bars, and markets.
Pros
- Super walkable
- Endless food and nightlife
- LGBTQ+ friendly
- Next to Playa Los Muertos
- Fun from morning to late night
When I visited, Pride events were happening and the whole neighborhood felt alive. We also stumbled into a tennis competition – there’s always something going on in PV.
Where I stayed: ZonaZ Boutique – gorgeous rooms, warm staff, and the perfect location.
Things to Do in Puerto Vallarta

1. The Malecon Boardwalk
The Malecon is PV’s beating heart.
Expect:
- Ocean views
- Sculptures
- Street performers
- Market stalls
- Sunset views
- Endless food and drink stops
Grab a drink, wander, shop, and soak in the vibe.
2. Hit the Beaches

Both of my trips were essentially “beach every day,” and honestly, that’s the perfect PV agenda.
Top beaches:
- Playa Los Muertos (Romantic Zone’s main beach)
- Nuevo Vallarta Beach (wide, calm, peaceful)
- Conchas Chinas (quieter, scenic, beautiful rock formations)
Rent chairs, order a mojito or margarita, and live your best life.
3. Eat Everything

PV has an incredible food scene at every price point.
Don’t miss:
- Rooftop cocktails
- Fresh seafood
- Tacos al pastor
- Beachfront breakfasts
- Trendy restaurants in the Romantic Zone
You can splurge, or you can eat super cheap. Either way, you win.
4. Explore Puerto Vallarta’s Different Zones

PV is made up of walkable micro-neighborhoods:
- Romantic Zone: nightlife, bars, beach clubs
- Centro: Malecon, markets, shops
- Marina Vallarta: upscale, quieter
- Hotel Zone: resorts + easy bus access
I walked through all of them and never felt unsafe..
5. Rooftop Bars & Sunset Views

PV sunsets are unreal. Rooftops range from chill to party vibes, and many have infinity pools or ocean views.
6. Nightlife
Especially in the Romantic Zone.
There’s always something happening – Pride events, DJ nights, clubs, relaxed bars, and rooftop parties.
Getting Around Puerto Vallarta
One of PV’s best features is how easy (and cheap!) it is to get around.
Bus
- Safe, cheap, and runs frequently
- Great for going between Nuevo Vallarta and downtown
Uber
- Widely available
- Affordable
- Perfect for airport trips
Taxis
- Everywhere
- Ask for the price before getting in
Walking
If you’re staying in the Romantic Zone or Centro, you can walk almost everywhere.
When to Visit Puerto Vallarta
I’ve visited Puerto Vallarta twice now – both in February – and honestly, it’s become my favorite time to go…
- February is right in the middle of PV’s dry season, which means: sunny days, warm-but-not-scorching temperatures, low humidity, and almost no rain.
- Daily highs stay in the low 80s°F (around 26–28°C), which is ideal for long beach days, rooftop cocktails, wandering the Malecon, or walking between the different zones without overheating. Evenings cool off just enough to make it comfortable for dinner, drinks, and exploring on foot.
- A really fun, energetic vibe. On one of my trips, the Romantic Zone was full of Pride-related events, and the nightlife was buzzing all week long.
- Slightly higher prices this time of year, but still very reasonable compared to other beach destinations. And because the weather is so consistently good, you’re getting maximum value out of every day.
Is Puerto Vallarta Safe?
PV is generally very safe for tourists.
Here’s what I recommend:
- Stick to well-lit areas at night
- Keep your phone secure on the Malecon
- Use Uber or licensed taxis
- Skip tap water (ice in restaurants is fine)
Common scams? Nothing major — just normal tourist-area upselling.
How Long to Stay in Puerto Vallarta

A full week felt perfect both times I visited – plenty of time for:
- Beach days
- Walking the city
- A day trip or two
- Rooftops and sunsets
- Slow mornings
If you only have 3–4 days, pick one zone to base yourself in and stick to it.

I loved my time in Puerto Vallarta. I visited at the end of January and the weather and energy was fantastic then too. I got an Airbnb near the romantic zone and would definitely do it again.
