How to Pack Smart for Your Road Trip: Essentials & Packing List

Road tripping is one of my favorite ways to do a budget-friendly trip! You can go at your own pace, go exactly where you want to go, and you even get to pick the music! But packing for a road trip is often different than packing for a week abroad (for starters, you have an entire car rather than just a carry-on!). If you’re planning a summer road trip or long weekend getaway this guide will show you how to pack smart so you have just what you need and don’t need any unexpected shopping trips along the way!

1. Start with Packing Zones for Your Road Trip

Use bins or containers to categorize gear (e.g., clothes, kitchen, tech). This way you can find everything you need when you need it and you’re not wasting time searching through everything.

Pack smart for your next road trip by organizing your trunk with designated bins and bags

2. Clothes Strategy: Mix & Match

Roll clothes in packing cubes – space-saving and wrinkle-free. I love the Eagle Creek packing cubes because they’re durable, come in fun colors, and have a different size for everything (read my full review).

Also, consider packing a capsule wardrobe: a week’s worth of outfits that pair well. If it’s a long trip, drop half, do laundry mid-way, and keep gear light.

3. Divide Bags by Purpose

Portion items based on use:

  • In-car basics (snacks, water, chargers) – things you’re going to need while on the road
  • Cargo gear (bulkier camping or cooking supplies) – this will also include things that will stay in hotels along the way (suitcases, extra shoes, etc.)
  • Essentials bin (first-aid, maps, tools) – these can be tucked away in the car. They don’t need necessarily need to be within reach while driving but they’re easy to get to if you do need them.

4. Road Trip Emergency Essentials You Can’t Skip

Be prepared for an emergency flat tire on your road trip

There’s nothing worse than an unexpected car emergency when you’re on the road. It brings everything to a (literal) stop. Be prepared. Make sure you have what you need for those just in case moments. Be sure to include:

  • A first-aid kit, jumper cables, tire inflator, duct tape, flashlight.
  • A small tool kit & gloves – just enough for roadside need.

5. Car Comfort & Entertainment

Depending on where you’re headed, you are likely to have some long stretches in the car. You’re going to want to be comfortable so that you can enjoy your next stop. Bring:

  • Neck pillows, light blankets, cozy socks.
  • Pack headphones or download podcasts + playlists for offline listening (I highly recommend putting together your own “mixed tape” style playlist before you head out).

6. Stay Fueled with These Road Trip Snack Ideas

Coffee for your road trip is never a bad idea

Long stretches on the road – and even once you’ve stopped – are made a lot easier with fuel. Plus, road trip snacks are part of the reason to take a road trip!

  • Use reusable water bottles and keep a cooler stocked with healthy snacks like nuts, cheese, fruit. I also love some road trip trail mix (with chocolate, obviously).
  • Bring washable travel mugs and basic condiments for picnic-ready meals. I like to keep a beach towel or blanket in the car for these random stops, too!

7. Toiletries & Quick Fixes

Hopefully, this one goes without saying. In the car you’re in pretty close quarters with your travel buddy… everyone is going to appreciate some general hygiene. Bring

  • Travel-size toiletries: toothbrush/toothpaste, deodorant, sunscreen, bug spray, wet wipes.
  • Include a Tide pen for stain emergencies and small trash or grocery bags to keep the car tidy.

8. Tech & Navigation Essentials

Packing smart for a road trip includes a charger and phone mount

Perhaps the smartest of all pack smart rules, don’t forget to bring your directions! Unless you’re still rocking Map Quest printable directions, you’re going to want to make sure you have chargers and a phone mount. Also consider:

  • A car adapter and power banks – organize cables in labeled Ziplocs.
  • Keeping a paper atlas or screenshot directions in case of GPS failure.

9. Emergency & Prep Kit

A breakdown isn’t the only emergency you’ll want to be prepared for. While we don’t usually plan for it, being ready should something happen is always a good idea. Make sure your car has:

  • Road flares, a tow strap, reflective vest, rain poncho, gloves, seatbelt cutter, window breaker, and a snow shovel (depending on your time of year or location). Amazon sells a great full kit with 125 pieces.
  • Spare cash, key copies, registration, and insurance info in the glove box .

10. Bonus Tips

A road trip should be fun and packing smart doesn’t just have to be prepping for an emergency. Whether I’m on a road trip or not, I like to keep some essentials in my car for unplanned FUN! Like…

  • A beach towel or two for any unplanned water stops (think lakes, beaches, water parks).
  • Flip flops (or sneakers depending on your every day shoe of choice). You never know when you’re dogs need some fresh air!
  • An insulated shopping bag. This one has come in handy so many times! Whether its 90 degrees and you want to bring some popsicles to the next stop or you pick up a cold bottle of bubbly for the hotel later, we have used an unexpectedly needed insulated bag so many times!
  • An extra t-shirt. For when you have a ketchup emergency, a rain emergency, a heat emergency, or anything else, I keep an extra t-shirt I don’t care that much about in my car.
  • An umbrella. This one speaks for itself.
