This was also the trip that sold me on travel insurance 100% of the time (hello head stitches).
1. Zip-Lining Through the Jungle Canopy (The #1 Must-Do Adventure)

If Costa Rica had an official activity, it would be zip-lining – and Manuel Antonio does it really well. This was, without a doubt, our very favorite excursion! The perfect amount of time. The perfect amount of thrill and adventure. Hands down, must do.
Expect:
- 8–12 ziplines
- A rappel or two
- Tarzan swings
- Waterfall views
- Sloths and monkeys just chillin’ next to you
- A fun, hype crew that makes even scared travelers feel brave
Why it’s worth it:
You see the rainforest from a totally new perspective – and it’s surprisingly beginner-friendly.
Best for: Families, couples, adventure lovers, beginners
What to bring: Closed-toe shoes, bug spray, GoPro
Want the easiest way to book? This is the exact tour we did and I couldn’t have asked for more. Lunch and pictures were included!
2. Mangrove Kayaking at Isla Damas
(Peaceful, Wildlife-Heavy, Perfect for Nature Lovers)
If you want something slow, calm, and full of wildlife, the Damas mangroves are your spot. You’ll paddle through narrow waterways while guides point out:
- White-faced monkeys
- Sloths
- Herons and kingfishers
- Crocodiles (from a respectful distance)
Why it’s worth it:
It’s peaceful, slow, and full of wildlife – the perfect break between beach days.
Best for: Bird watchers, photographers, calm-nature-experiences
Tip: Choose a morning tour for cooler temps.
3. Nauyaca Waterfalls Hike or 4×4 Ride

(One of the Most Beautiful Waterfalls in Costa Rica)
Nauyaca is the waterfall people visit again and again – and it’s reachable from Quepos in about an hour. You can hike 4 km each way or ride in a 4×4 truck to save time and energy (but the hike is totally worth it!).
At the base?
Two massive drops, a natural swimming pool, and some of the best photo spots in the country.
Why it’s worth it:
It’s a postcard come to life.
Best for: Anyone who loves waterfalls or wants a “wow” moment
Safety Tip: Wear water shoes – the rocks at the base are slippery
4. Catamaran Cruise & Snorkeling (The Best Sunset Tour in Manuel Antonio)
(Sunset + Dolphins + Swimming = Perfect Afternoon)
Catamaran tours are the vibe in Manuel Antonio – especially at sunset.
What to expect:
- Dolphins (they show up often!)
- Snorkeling in calm coves
- A fun boat crew
- Fresh fruit + drinks
- Beautiful coastline views
Why it’s worth it:
You get wildlife, relaxation, sun, and great photos all in one.
Pro Tip:
Choose an afternoon cruise for the best light and calmer water.
5. Night Jungle Tour
(Because Costa Rica Comes Alive After Dark)
I admit I was a little skeptical on this one… like how cool can it be at night? But turns our… Costa Rica at night is a different world – glowing insects, frogs, night birds, lizards, and the occasional sloth sighting.
Guides are incredible at spotting wildlife. What you’ll see on your own = almost nothing. What you’ll see with a guide = 20+ species in 2 hours.
Why it’s worth it:
It’s educational, fun, and surprisingly safe. (But practice your nighttime camera skills more than I did!).
Best for: Wildlife lovers, families with older kids, photographers
6. ATV Adventure Through the Rainforest

(Muddy, Fun, and Surprisingly Scenic)
ATV tours take you off-road past farms, rainforest, hills, and sometimes even waterfalls. If you want to get a little dirty – this is the one. Unexpected bonus… cool birds!
Best for: Adrenaline lovers, friend groups, couples
Bonus: Some tours include a short hike + swimming break.
7. Surf Lessons or Board Rentals at Playa Espadilla

Whether you’re a beginner or already know what you’re doing, Espadilla is one of the best beginner-friendly surf beaches in Costa Rica.
Why it’s worth it:
Warm water, forgiving waves, friendly local instructors, and rentals right on the beach.
Tip:
Early morning = best waves + fewer crowds. We also lucked out, and our hotel front desk told us exactly where to park without getting a ticket and without paying!
8. Rainmaker Conservation Park
(Hanging Bridges + Waterfalls + Zero Crowds)

If you want a rainforest experience that feels wild and untouched – without the shoulder-to-shoulder tourist traffic of Manuel Antonio National Park – Rainmaker is your spot. It’s only about 30 minutes from Quepos, but it feels like another world.
What to expect:
- Well-maintained trails
- Multiple suspension bridges
- Several waterfalls
- Swimming areas
- Light–moderate hiking
- Optional guided tours
Why it’s worth it:
You get a full rainforest immersion — hanging bridges, waterfalls, wildlife, and sweeping canopy views — with a fraction of the people. It’s the perfect “hidden gem” day trip.
Best for: Nature lovers, photographers, families, anyone who wants the “rainforest without the crowds.”
Cost: ~$20–$30 USD for entry; tours range $65–$95
Time Needed: 3–4 hours
You don’t need a guide to do Rainmaker (we didn’t use one). But it was helpful to buy our tickets ahead of time.
9. Manuel Antonio National Park Guided Hike
The park is actually really cool and definitely deserves a spot on the list. Some of the best beaches in the area (you do need park passes to get to them), and if you find the right tour, the wildlife is insane!
Guides use high-powered scopes to spot wildlife you’d never see alone (I seriously don’t know how they spotted them in the first place):
- Sloths
- Frogs
- Bats
- Monkeys
- Rare birds
After the walk, spend time at the beach inside the park (seriously… gorgeous).
Why it’s worth it:
Sloths, monkeys, frogs, pristine beaches, and guides who turn tiny dots into actual animals you can see through a scope.
Pro Tip: Most tours don’t include your park entry passes. Make sure you book them ahead of time for a seamless day.
Having a car in Costa Rica means all of your excursions can run on your time. Costa Rica is also really easy to drive in (though I do recommend having experience with a stick shift – you’ll pay extra for an automatic). You can easily rent a car from San Jose Airport or Liberia Airport.
What to Bring on These Excursions
- Lightweight daypack
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- Quick-dry towel
- Waterproof phone pouch
- Bug spray
- Hiking sandals
- Portable charger
- Refillable water bottle
- Airalo eSIM for data
Final Tips for Choosing the Best Excursions
- Book morning tours for better wildlife and fewer crowds. And if you’re going to the National Park, you need to get your own pass.
