On my first round-the-world backpacking adventure, my best friend wasn’t a person – it was my Osprey backpack, “Beast”. Along with its zip-off counterpart, “Mini Beast”, we tackled cobblestone streets, overnight trains, and endless hostel stays. If you’re about to start your own backpacking adventure, here’s how to pack smart – light, but comfortable.

The right gear makes all the difference when backpacking through cobblestone streets, bustling cities, and remote trails.
Hosteling or hustling up a European hill (which, let’s be honest, is what most European cities are), both require some main staples and some pre-planning. You’re going to be carrying your life on your back, you want to make sure you pack smart. Check out my guide before you pack (and then repack… and maybe one more time?) for your next journey!
Here’s my packing list of must-haves for a European backpacking adventure!
Packing Essentials for Multi-Day Hostel Backpacking
- Packing Cubes – The ultimate space-savers! They keep your backpack organized and clothes compressed to save space! (Check out my Eagle Creek review!)
- Ear plugs – whether it’s snorers in a shared room or an overnight train, ear plugs are a life saver! (I’m a foam kind of girl but these reusables work great!)
- Headlamp (+ batteries) – for those mid-night bathroom runs and early morning packing
- Power adaptors
- Laundry line
- Quick dry towel – a “body” sized one doubles for beach days and hostel showers!
- Trash bags/grocery bags/resealable bags (not to be used for predawn packing! Don’t be that “guy”!)
- Sleeping bag (optional)
Backpacker Hacks: Simple Packing Tips That Make a Big Difference
Bring some safety pins! They’re lightweight and easy to carry and you can hang wet things off the back of your pack with ease (plus *gross alert*, they’re great for draining blisters – don’t forget the alcohol wipes).
A reusable grocery bag that can easily fold up is great when you need to do some grocery shopping! Check out these!
If it’s going to rain and you have to carry your pack, line it with a trash bag. Your bag will still be wet, but the insides dry! (Or try out a pack cover to keep the outside dry, too!)
An eye mask goes a long way when lights out are past your bedtime! Plus it doubles on the plane or train!
