Costa Rica is one of the friendliest countries you’ll ever visit, and the Quepos region is no exception. Whether you’re drawn to stunning beaches, tropical rainforests, or the thrill of adventure, this little slice of paradise has something for everyone.
I had the chance to spend a week in Manuel Antonio last April, and we’re still talking about it. It’s one of those places that you just can’t help but rave about. Want to know why? Keep reading!
Manuel Antonio: The Heart of Quepos
Located on the western coast of Costa Rica, just southwest of San José, Manuel Antonio is the ultimate destination for adventure, wildlife, and relaxation. After picking up our rental car at the airport (about a 3-hour drive), we were immediately struck by the beauty of the surroundings. The lush jungle, pristine beaches, and abundant wildlife make this area a true gem in Costa Rica.
Pro Tip: There are two routes from San José to Manuel Antonio, each offering stunning views. If you have the time, take them both on your roundtrip to experience all the diverse landscapes Costa Rica has to offer.
Things to Do
From hiking through rainforests to zip-lining over the canopy, Quepos and Manuel Antonio offer a range of exciting activities. Here’s a breakdown of some of our favorites:
Manuel Antonio National Park

If you’re a nature lover, Manuel Antonio National Park should be at the top of your list. This place is packed with exotic wildlife, from sloths to toucans, and everything in between. We opted for a guided tour, which was totally worth it. Our guide spotted creatures we never would’ve seen on our own. It was incredible to be standing there talking about the beautiful park and then have our guide stop and point out a rare (and slightly terrifying) spider dozens of feet up above. Pro tip: If you can, book your park entry ticket in advance (not all tours include it). Don’t forget to bring a water bottle and sunscreen —trust me, even in the shade, it gets hot.
After your hike, cool off with a swim at one of the park’s beautiful beaches. The combination of adventure and relaxation is unbeatable.
Rainmaker Park: Costa Rica’s Hidden Gem
If you’re a nature lover, Manuel Antonio National Park should be at the top of your list. This place is packed with exotic wildlife, from sloths to toucans, and everything in between. We opted for a guided tour, which was totally worth it. Our guide spotted creatures we never would’ve seen on our own. After your hike, cool off with a swim at one of the park’s beautiful beaches. The combination of adventure and relaxation is unbeatable.
Zip-Lining Through the Costa Rican Jungle: A Thrill-Seeker’s Dream
For an adrenaline rush, there’s no better way to experience the jungle than by zip-lining. We had the best time on the longest twin zip-line in Central America (it’s a mile long!). The guides were fantastic, making sure we were safe and having fun the whole time. As we zipped above the jungle canopy across 14 platforms, we spotted monkeys and sloths in the trees below. Afterward, we enjoyed a tasty lunch and got access to photos from our tour and enjoyed roundtrip transportation from our hotel.
Beautiful Beaches
The beaches around Quepos and Manuel Antonio offer a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. Playa Espadilla, the most popular beach near Manuel Antonio, is ideal for a classic beach day with soft sand, warm waters, and activities like surfing or paddleboarding. For a quieter escape, head to Playa Biesanz, a hidden gem tucked away from the crowds. This secluded beach is perfect for a peaceful retreat, with calm, clear waters ideal for snorkeling. Finally, Playa Manuel Antonio, located inside the national park, offers crystal-clear waters and stunning views. It’s a bit busier, but it’s still a must-visit spot to unwind after a hike in the park.Whether you’re into action-packed activities or just want to lounge on the sand, the beaches here have you covered. Here’s where to go for a slice of paradise:
Pro Tip: If you’re visiting during the dry season (December to April), expect sunny days and calm waters—perfect beach weather!
Bonus Tip: Talk to the staff at your hotel about visiting the beach like a local. Our hotel gave us great tips on where to park for free!
Which beach sounds like your perfect spot—Playa Espadilla for the lively vibe, or Playa Biesanz for a quieter escape? Let me know in the comments below!
Best Time to Visit:
The dry season, from December to April, is definitely the sweet spot for visiting these beaches—sunny days and calm waters make for the best beach experiences. But if you’re looking to avoid the crowds and don’t mind a little rain, the wet season (May to November) is quieter and lush, though be ready for some afternoon showers.
Getting Around Quepos

We were glad we had a car in Quepos (and I was glad my wife was comfortable driving a stick shift on that mountain!). While our hotel had a restaurant, the local spots were not really within walking distance (plus it’s a mountain so it’s not a casual walk down the street). A car also gave us a lot of freedom to take our time or see other things (for example, we drove ourselves to Rainmaker Park, and were able to see other areas nearby when we would choose to divert from the our plan).
That said, nearly every organized tour has shuttle service you can book with it, and many of the higher end resorts of shuttles themselves to either the town of Quepos or the beach.
Still, I recommend a car for the freedom of it and the ride from the airport. Whether you fly into San Jose or Liberia Airport, it’s about a 3 hour drive to Quepos. Private transportation and shuttles are available but limit your flexibility (and they aren’t that much cheaper than renting a car – in fact, for us, it was cheaper to rent a car than pay for a shuttle).
Where to Eat
El Avion – A literal airplane (with ties the Iran Contra affair) that had great food and you can actually go in the cockpit. Plus, we had some monkey visitors, if you’re into that sort of thing.
Agua Azul Cafe – Great spot overlooking the water. We sat upstairs at the bar and watched them make so many fresh dishes and barbecue. They had great drinks and great service!
Runaway Grill – On the water by the marina didn’t disappoint. The food was great but also you have the added view of the water, the yachts, and the boardwalk down below.
El Wagon – I realize going to Costa Rica to get pizza might be seen as a lame-o movie, but in fairness, we got takeout to have at the pool one afternoon after our trip to the National Park. And, we don’t regret it! It was great!!
Where to Stay
From budget-friendly options to luxury resorts, there’s something for every type of traveler in Quepos. Here are a few of our top picks:
Hotel Villas Lirio –
Looking for an affordable yet comfortable stay? Hotel Villas Lirio is a great choice. The location is ideal, with the beach and the national park just a short drive away. We loved the jungle-themed courtyard pool, and the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. It’s a perfect spot to relax after a day of adventure.
Parador Nature Resort and Spa –
If you’re ready to splurge a little, Parador Nature Resort and Spa is the place to be. With ocean views, multiple pools, and a full-service spa, it’s a luxury experience without the steep price tag. Plus, it’s nestled in the jungle, giving you that perfect mix of relaxation and adventure.
Jungle Vista Boutique Hotel –
This boutique hotel offers a cozy, intimate vibe. Located in the hills, it offers a peaceful escape with incredible jungle views. It’s still close to all the main attractions, but with a quieter, more secluded feel. Perfect for couples or anyone looking for a little downtime.
Issimo Suites Boutique Hotel and Spa –
Couples, this one’s for you. Issimo Suites is an adults-only boutique hotel that offers a romantic, luxury experience. Private pools, stunning views of the Pacific, and a spa to relax in—it’s got everything you need for a quiet, intimate getaway. Plus, it’s near the national park, so you can easily explore but still retreat to your peaceful, luxurious space.
Budget-Friendly Option –
If you’re traveling on a budget, Hotel Mimos is a solid choice. It’s simple but offers great value with easy access to everything—beaches, restaurants, and the park. It’s not as fancy as the high-end options, but you’ll get the basics at a price that’s hard to beat.
